  • Your first therapy appointment is primarily about getting to know each other and laying the groundwork for future sessions. You can expect your therapist to ask questions about your background, current concerns, and what brought you to therapy.

The session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions. You might want to learn more about the therapist’s approach, what sessions typically look like, and how they can help with your specific goals.

Your therapist will likely explain important details such as confidentiality, session structure, and any policies (like cancellations or fees). Together, you may begin to outline goals for therapy.

It’s normal to feel a bit nervous or unsure at first. There’s no pressure to share everything right away — therapy moves at your pace. The most important thing is starting the process and seeing whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you.
